Here I am, watching another Schrader film and feeling a bit meh about it. Tbh, Elordi was the draw for me, but he’s pretty unremarkable (truly sorry to say, because I do like him!). Though, to be fair, he might not be to blame—it seems like he’s just doing the usual Schrader thing: playing a flat, distant, and quiet dude. It’s an interesting storytelling style, but I’m not finding much here that keeps the layers glued together.

My very small Schrader ranking so far (lol):

    1. Master Gardener
    2. First Reformed
    3. Oh, Canada

Opus feels like sitting through a conversation with someone convinced they’re saying something profound—but their delivery is so pretentious and rambling that you just end up zoning out.

Playful casting - completely wasted. Characters drop out of the story before they’ve even said more than two lines. And I’m not convinced the film knows what it wants to be. It’s too self-serious to be fun horror, not sharp enough to be satire, and nowhere near outlandish or comedic enough to work as a farce.

Anyway… the only real win here is ‘Dina, Simone.’ I’ve had that on repeat for the last 24 hours. DINA! SIMONE!

A REALLY fun set up with diminishing returns as it settles into its central conflict. As an antagonist, Ruffalo’s Marshall is written with thin motivations and performed in a way that seldom reaches beyond the Trump-mimicry it relies on. Pattinson and Ackie are delightful.

Couldn’t give two licks about whatever sort of (maybe fictional?) geo-political conflict started all the DRAMA here — doesn’t matter! This is a well done spy thriller with propulsive dialogue and a fantastic ensemble cast. Stylish, tight, and minimal.

Surprised to say that Marisa Abela steals every scene she’s in.
