While only a tech demo, 2 Girls 1 Gut is an audacious yet captivating short whose technical prowess is nothing short of phenomenal. Furthermore, with highly animated performances from Uonome Gajiro and Natsuki, the film has certainly piqued my interest in what’s to come from this initial concept.
A viscerally brutal depiction of body dysmorphia, Apotemnofilia has an incredibly strong fixation on, surprisingly, apotemnofilia (now referred to as body integrity identity disorder). Our main protagonist’s sudden descent into this real mental condition delivers some magnificently graphic depictions of body horror and self-mutilation, fully displaying this gory imagery for all to discern. Additionally, these gory visuals are all attained through impressive practical effects, exhibiting a disturbingly high level of production value throughout the short.
Consisting of a single roll of Super8 film presented in a silent film style, *666 is a peculiar blend of classic films from the 1920-30s, the satanic panic of the ’70s-90s, and, of all things, the board games prominent in the 80s such as Girl Talk. Whilst attaining an authentic representation of the silent era, the production does have a slight air of campy undertones with its thematic yet playful score.
