Mickey 17 is an adaptation of the novel Mickey7, by Edward Ashton. Not a faithful one, but quite an interesting one. The most obvious change is the character of Marshal, who now has a wife, and instead of being a generic military asshole, he is a caricature of Trump. Watching this in theaters give you an entirely different perspective. The filmmaking can initially look simple, but the more you look into each shot the better the film gets. The antithesis between the main characters, and the (purposefully) generic nature of the characters and the city makes this feel like a a parable. What a shitshow this was. A movie that aspires to be arthouse but completely misses the point of what a good arthouse movie actually is. Seven Samurai 1954
This is great and all, but it seems like the best thing about this movie is how influential it was. The plot itself is something that we've all seen before countless times and yes this was the movie that originally did it but it feels like this is just an older and overly long version of movies that we've already seen. Like I said, it's great but it's legacy is stronger than the movie itself. Kinda like Citizen Kane.
