The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder. - Alfred Hitchcock

Another great Pennebaker doc. Watch for Beth Howland recording “Getting Married Today” and Elaine Stritch give her all for “The Ladies Who Lunch”.

The context: Warren Beatty plays a hairdresser whose promiscuous ways threaten his ability to get a loan to open his own salon.

The subtext: the cheating and self-involvement of the characters acts as a metaphor for the recent Nixon presidency.

More a film of its time, it’s hard to find any of these characters interesting. Maybe that’s the ultimate point, but I frankly didn’t care.

At this point I’d probably watch Willem Dafoe read the phone book.

Sadly, there was no phone on this island.

Three friends spend the day together after a night of riots that leave their friend in a coma.  Sadly, the reality of the plot is as true today as it was when the film was made thirty years ago. Sharp black and white photography and a brilliant cast.
