American Movie 1999
On its surface level it’s a very funny slice of life documentary, but when you really dig down into it I don’t think any other movie does a better job at portraying the human condition.
I think I could write a book about the philosophy of this film.

There are two big things that make this a great film:
1) it’s total avoidance of cliche or obvious plot points. Every time it feels like it’s about to turn into an easy shallow dramatic beat it either goes the other way or ignores it.
2) There are no villains in the movie, there are no assholes characters at all. Everyone feels like they’re really just doing their best to deal.
These two things working together, along with great performances, make the movie more relatable, realistic, and emotionally powerful.
