  Does a decent job adapting the book but might be frustrating and confusing if you haven’t read the book, as a lot of the exposition can be quite subtle sometimes — a blink and you’ll miss sort of thing. It gets much of the messages and themes across, but it’s definitely not as impactful as the book.   Despite the 3 hour long runtime, I was never close to being bored by this film. I expected more action, but I wasn’t at all disappointed with what I got. This film has some of the best cinematography I’ve seen ever. The colors really pop out, but never in a way that’s too distracting. It doesn’t have the strongest characters of any Kurosawa film, but that’s the only real criticism I have of it. I wouldn’t put this film up there with “Rashomon,” “Seven Samurai,” or “Throne of Blood” but it’s not too far off quality-wise from those masterpieces.
