Mainstream 2020
Andrew Garfield gave an exemplary performance (as was expected). This was a VERY weird film, truly absurd in its LA/hollywood magical realism, toting that “anyone” can “become a star” due in part to the internet and the people-mostly impressionable kids-that consume it. Very pulp-y, extremely fun. To have actual youtubers in a film thats satirizing monetizing your face for “content” is interesting- were they “in” on the joke? Did they think agreeing to be in something like this would “better”…

La La Land 2016
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love musicals, and the grandiose nature of old hollywood. Movies just don’t get made like this anymore. There’s a certain magical realism (I think) to musicals, to big grand gestures and elaborate musical numbers, it’s truly about the art of performance. It wouldn’t have had the same emotional feeling if it was just a rom-com.

Sing Street 2016
This is probably the most underrated movie that I’ve seen in a while. From the soundtrack to the acting, it’s just superb. It strikes a chord that makes you feel young again, like anything is possible. I really love how ambiguous the ending is, having some sort of fantastical shot.
