Carole Lombard's funny bone had not matured yet. She and Gable however make a convincing couple (although thryy apparently weren't yet) which makes for some very sweet and cheeky pre-code scenes and moves the uncomplicated plot along nicely.

It's impossible to rate this sword and sandal spectacle fairly due to the enormously thick layers of coffee-coloured make-up that Jack Palance (as Atilla) wears, which is not only preposterous but also so unnecessary - Palance's striking features and Ukrainian parentage actually made him probably the best Hollywood actor of the time to have been cast as the Eurasian ruler (along with Yul Brynner). Palance's usually brilliant acting skills are significantly buried beneath the ridiculous mask, though mercifully Atilla isn't a caricature and is in fact depicted as intelligent with surprisingly little 'barbarity'.

If Paul Robeson's singing voice doesn't make your eyes well with tears, I'm afraid you're dead inside.
