Watching this in December 2024, it's hard not to draw parallels between the events of this show and the MAGA takeover of American government. Remains to be seen if they resolve the same way too.
A convincingly compelling tale told in modern cinema verite style, inviting us to take different perspectives (sometimes literally) on what's unfolding past and present. An extremely important treatise on the messiness of truth in our new age of post-fact, vibes-driven reality.
Bonus points for Sandra's 100% accurate reflection on the hollowness of being a survivor, and one of my favorite examples of Chekhov's gun.
How Dan Aykroyd makes it through this movie without breaking the fourth wall to apologize to the audience several times is beyond me.
As with the best MST3K legends (e.g., Space Mutiny), I doubt anyone's actually seen this movie without Mike and Co. riffing on it. That said, L'Uomo Puma gets some credit for a disco earworm of a soundtrack, Donald Pleasance looking panicked, and helping to convince the lead actor that he's better off as a lawyer than a movie star.
