  there’s a scene in the first part of the film where an old man and Ivan have a conversation within a town that has been completely decimated by the war. the old man acknowledges that his mother is dead, killed as a result of the war, however in the same breath says that she will be back soon. he says all this whilst standing next to a chimney that has not burnt down. it stuck out in my mind so…

  unfortunately indicative of the state of big-budget cinema, where greedy industry execs tarnish established franchises for their own greed. this did not need to exist. it is a completely vapid experience, and borderline disrespectful to the source material.
