  imo Gray is one of modern american cinema’s most sensitive and understated filmmakers

  love that he refuses to let the movie devolve into cynicism and, as a result, says something more profound. ending could have gone horribly wrong but although i’m not crazy about the score, he uses it smartly to steer the finale away from sentimentality. so refreshing how the immigrant parents are so compassionate and understanding.

  love how Hogg cuts and avoids the interstitial and the expository. every moment is of consequence.
