More domestic thriller with supernatural elements than a ghost horror, its commitment to the latter genre is largely absent by the midpoint. This genre shift isn't inherently a problem, but if one goes in expecting a horror film, they're going to be disappointed. Fat City 1972
Huston at his most understated but as brilliant a storyteller as ever. Gardner's script would be hard to screw up, but Huston's eye has never been sharper nor as nuanced. Stacey Keach is fantastic, the first time I think I've seen him. A real young Jeff Bridges and a phenomenal Susan Tyrell buoy this strong supporting cast, all of whom are achingly real and wonderfully authentic.
