Watched this on a plane yesterday and just ended up watching Beauty and the Beast in the row in front of me cause it was far more entertaining watching a soundless Beauty and the Beast then this fucking slog
Heartworn Highways-esque lo-fi tone in this twisted, drug-fueled Dennis Hopper nihilism, all served with a melancholy, Neil Young-led soundtrack. This movie is depraved, misanthropic, nauseating, and without redemption. But shot beautifully and with a superb soundtrack.
Peggy Ashcroft delivers a wonderfully outspoken Mrs. Moore who refuses to hide her disgust at British colonialism despite both her age and the vain expectations of decorum within the self-aggrandizing “civil society” of colonizers, all within David Lean’s stunning cinematography and set designs which never fail to showcase the beauty of vast, desolate landscapes. The only reason I didn’t give it a higher rating is my love for the book, though I concede that Sir Lean captures the tone beautifully, including the echoes in the cave, the moonlight in the mosque, and the fervor in the courtroom after the trial. Underrated Lean flick.
