Found the performances from both leads engaging enough. And Eisenberg firmly cements his prowess behind the camera with this sophomore effort for sure.
However…
Shades of Sideways plagued the proceedings here (an introspective buddy-road trip consistently hampered by the emotional outbursts from the more volatile of the pair)… and whilst that particular Alexander Payne entry certainly has its following, afraid I’m decidedly NOT one of them (so I took points off anytime the narrative strayed into that film’s territory).
Bottom line… A Real Pain‘s pretty good though occasionally falls victim into actually becoming one.
