"If human kind can't overcome its immediate interests enough to ensure its own survival, then the only natural response is despair."

I find myself thinking about this movie more and more. It has really been on my mind in the last few days since Joe Biden signed an executive order shutting down the Keystone Pipeline, which led to outrage among a lot of people I knew growing up in a baptist church in a small Alabama town.

    The truth is,…

"I'm not leaving bro. I'm the last one left."

There's this house on Grandview Drive in Eastaboga, Alabama. A tri-story house that was mostly brick with some vinyl, green shutters, a fenced in backyard, and to this day a tiny footprint in the driveway from where my brother ran through it while the cement was still wet.

A couple moments in this movie that will stick with me for a long time:

A young kid staring at his arm in the beginning and discovering, perhaps for the first time, that skin color is something that matters.

A once promising student who had everything ahead of him sitting in a classroom at Nickel where the teacher is writing an elementary math problem on the board in a room full of teenagers. What might this kid have become if given the chance?

I think the POV shots work perfectly and make this film feel deeply personal.

Felt like what if Franz Kafka wrote an episode of The Twilight Zone.

    Loved it.

I bet Joe Paterno was excited to find out he was being portrayed by Al Pacino as he burned in Hell.

"Never be afraid of who you are."

I had pretty low expectations coming in. I thought, at best, this would likely be the new trilogy's Return of the Jedi with JJ Abrams back at the helm terrified to take any risks to potentially put forth a divisive film like Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi.

I expected blatant fan service and ret-conning of The Last Jedi and it was even worse than I could have imagined. Abrams made what was effectively…
