Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain indeed mothered. Friendship and tension between the characters is palpable. Eamon O'Connell played Theo so well. Unpredictable until the climax.
[Spoilers ahead] The film makes me wonder if it was intentional to leave out other parts of Celine's background or if the events after Max's death were truly her own psychological spiral. Also refreshing to see Anne Hathaway play a villain and a mother as well.
Overall an entertaining film and a good edge-of-your-seat watch.

So tragic yet so beautifully made. One of the realest, rawest film adaptations of a true event I've ever seen. Loss, grief, hopelessness, terror, even the questioning of one's belief - all the actors perfectly captured these and more (and to think most of the cast were newcomers).
Cinematography, editing, special effects, production design, makeup, costume, and wardrobe, sound design, lighting - all 5 stars. Definitely a gripping experience. J.A. Bayona delivers a successful film that is both gut and heart-wrenching.
