Really impressive. The level of technical mastery required in order to be able to tell this story from the 1st person POV (of 2 characters, no less!) and have it all be so clear and precise from a storytelling perspective is insane.
I was clocking so many different things that Ramell Ross was doing along the way to ensure we were able to track which character we were following, and it was genius. Next level direction for sure.
My one…
Probably not actually a good movie? 😂
But you know what? One thing continues to be true: folk music and movies are a match made in heaven. I don't know what it is, but "Inside Llewyn Davis", "The Broken Circle Breakdown", or this, or any other Folk Driven movie just get a HUGE boost for the sake of a cinematic pairing that just truly works.
More Folk Musical Movies! (except with actual plots plz)
Genuinely could choose to give this film anywhere from 2.5 stars to 4.5 stars. Baffled and unsure how to respond, in truth.
I'm choosing the higher star rating here because despite the extremely long runtime, I absolutely did not feel it at all. I was engaged the whole time. Some people say that about every long movie they watch, but I am not one of them. I usually *feel* the whole 3 hours. So that was actually remarkable to me…
The Good: The Water visuals specifically (the others are very meh to me) The back half of the movie. The score. Entertaining, generally. Zoe Saldaña.
The Bad: The Non-Water visuals (uncanny valley meets a video game cutscene), the front 1/3 of the film is rough. And the 48 FPS?? Every time he went back to 24 I instantly knew and it was super distracting. Hate to be a traditionalist on this one but I don’t know! We should stick to 24!
Overall: Very much like the first time, it was fine and I’ll forget every second of it well before the next one comes out 🤷🏼♂️
