The Lighthouse’s ability to present a horror movie that is deeply rooted on the realities of isolation is heart-rending. Manila in the Claws of Light 1975
Brocka's world building here is unmatched, that I've found myself constantly peering between an odd dichotomy of both the unfamiliar and the largely relatable Manila. Essentially, Bembol Roco's Júlio Madiaga was nothing more but a mere vessel traversing into the vastness of the film's real main character, and that is the city of Manila — a throbbing mass of flesh, concrete, and neon lights that will devour any living soul into its fold. Madiaga’s quest for ‘ligaya paraiso’ tells this, but at what cost, is where the true claws of light unfolds.
