Usually any mention of satanic conspiracy makes me tune out — diffuses any tension for me — due to it’s campiness and maybe my lack of Catholic upbringing. The ending of ‘Hereditary’ for example felt like a wasted opportunity. However, Nic Cage’s terrifying performance in this, the nightmarish (almost Goosebumps-esque) depictions of sympathetic magic, and it’s general icky fairy tale tone gesturing at repressed memories of abuse made the supernatural payoff in this utterly chilling and deeply, deeply upsetting in a way that pretty much no modern occult horror has been

Audio of Slowdive, Cocteau Twins, & notably NIN in opening scene turned way down while dialogue turned way up. I feel like this diminished the textural and romantic effect of the movie, the sense of lush adolescent angst and desire.
