Cinematographer Kasper Tuxen made such a great call filming this to look like a 1980s evening news broadcast from hell. Every character in this movie makes their own personal deal with the devil and pays for it dearly. It’s fittingly maximalist and disgusting, claustrophobic and pitiful. All of these bozos believe the myth and will kill to defend it. Sad!

I never would’ve watched this without Criterion, so thanks to Criterion. A demon Pisces loverboy. A Nicole Kidman pixie cut. Lauren fucking Bacall. Peter fucking Stormare. Anne fucking Heche! This movie is spiritually European, Russian even. It shares an emotional and stylistic kinship with Bonello’s La Bête (2023) and Chekhov’s The Lady with the Dog (1899). I adore it very much.

This bear loves cocaine. Good soundtrack. Has some nice jokes about “mama bear” school reopening and first responder politics in the COVID-era that I’m sure won’t age well but were funny. Ray Liotta looks ROUGH. Not long enough to be too boring for a very intentionally campy movie. Also fun to see it on opening night with a friendly audience.
