Grief is weird. It’s been 7 years, but still, just for a fraction of a second, I think I can text my dad and ask have you seen Nemesis from 1992. It’s actually pretty cool, trash but in the best way. It’s the director that made the JCVD Cyborg movie. I’ve never seen that though, have you? Should I check it out now? Side note have you watched the modern Universal Soldier movies? They’re insane. Anyways Nemesis is cool, there…

As a kid that loved comic books there were plenty of superheroes that I wanted to be, but after being a teen then an adult in the era of Marvel movies I haven't fantasized about how great it would be to be one of them in a long time. Some days I wish I could be Doctor Sleep, though.

I'm sure I can point out several failings of this movie or some goofy moments that don't really work, but after…

We stayed at a hotel in New York, so we watched the movie about an evil hotel room in New York.

SLJ has made a career off of this kind of stuff, but even for him this seemed like a crazy easy paycheck.

    ★★★

One star for the surprisingly violent opening shootout.
One star for the cop lighting a cigarette in the sewer causing an explosion.
One star for the movie looking fairly good. Good job, Gyllenhaal.

Very odd choice at the end to play the emotional, uplifting score as one of the main characters calls the other a slur and runs away for no reason.

I'm sure there will be plenty of reviews talking about this movie in the wake of Oppenheimer, but this one shows you can tell a story about the inescapability of atomic power and how the world is forever screwed after the creation and use of the bomb and still be an exciting blockbuster with a giant monster. I guess Oppy proved to be a pretty exciting blockbuster with mainly people talking, but a kaiju makes everything cooler.

    I originally wished…

I watched this pretty much as Quibi content: in 15-20 minute intervals either on the treadmill or while having lunch at work. I also started watching this using a questionable rip on YouTube and literally the next day the Criterion Channel announced their Michelle Yeoh collection with this movie.

I was looking forward to watching this for a while since I knew this movie was supposed to be a post-apocalyptic sequel to the original, but I was a little let…
