“Where are the people who built your great city, father?”

    “Where they belong.”

“But father, what if one day… one of them is really hot?”

Fun fact: Ryan Gosling spent three months learning how to play the piano so that he could actually perform all of the music in this film himself

The first two thirds of this film is just a lovely whimsical vibe machine. Then there’s a rather abrupt tonal shift when it turns into a tragedy, which I’m still kind of chewing on.

It’s really interesting to be 31 years old and watch, for the first time, movies that had such a big impact in people’s adolescence and now hold a nostalgic place in pop culture.

Seen at Film Forum followed by a Q&A with screenwriter Larry Karaszewski, moderated by Film Forum Repertory Artistic Director Bruce Goldstein

One of the best Q&As I’ve ever been to. Larry Karaszewski is hilarious, and there was such a joyous mood throughout the whole theater. Bruce Goldstein kept gushing about the film (he introduced it as the greatest ever movie about making movies), and he didn’t seem to want to stop taking more audience questions. Everyone was just there on…
