Civil War 2024
Ambitious and affecting - but I ultimately felt the ride was a bit hollow upon the conclusion. At its core Civil War is an action war thriller - it felt more entertainment than art form and fell short by way of common tropes. I appreciated the ambiguity - we can make our own assumptions. I think I just wanted to feel more connected to the characters.
Otherwise, this is a great movie. Beautifully shot and directed and acted. Garland can make a great film. I’m still waiting, however, for him to make something transcendent.

The Boy and the Heron 2023
This coming of age story gets a wee bit crowded as the narrative rolls - but in the end, it’s another coming of age story by Miyazaki; and I show up to his movies for the types of adventures and surprises that can only erupt from my expectations.
Brilliantly animated - possibly the best of the modern ghibli era and with the warmth, wonder, and authenticity that we’ve been enjoying for decades. Sometimes it is in the most wild magic that the most simple truths are found.
Go see it and appreciate the conclusion of the Miyazaki era.
