Not a religious bone in my body anymore but this is the most interesting take on Jesus I’ve seen yet, loved the angle of him just wanting to be a normal man - made his sacrifice a lot more impactful for me than all the iterations I was raised on.
The soundtrack is stunning and used sparingly, and Willem Dafoe is incredible in this film.
I would not have thought of retelling Pinocchio with fascist Italy as the setting, but that's why Guillermo is the master. What a setting to retell this classic in, Disney could never.
Stop-motion is a lovely form of animation and this movie is stunning and brimming with charm all the way through. Filled with dark religious imagery that triggers some happy part of my brain.
One thing not clicking for me in this 100% were the musical numbers, they're fine but nothing I find amazing. Also felt just a teensy bit long.

Amusing enough, and I’ll always appreciate returns to 2D animation. Got a few good chuckles from me but the joke lines are a pretty mixed bag, new cartoon humor just doesn’t hit as hard as the classic stuff. I can see myself turning into an old man saying “back in my day” in real time and I don’t like it.
Also this really toed the line to almost being PG-13 and I kind of wish we had that instead. Are kids watching Looney Tunes?

While I enjoyed a lot about this, the exaggerated characters started to wear on me by the end - Ruffalo felt miscast here and I wasn’t sold on his Trump cadence.
Still pretty funny, clever, and full of zany Bong antics, his beliefs in veganism pretty apparent with how disgusting the meat in this movie looked. I’m curious how different this is from the novel that it’s based on.
