Daniel Kremer’s fascinating video essay is a personal journey that, along the way, gets very deep into the mythic qualities of the American desert by linking two utterly dissimilar films whose relationship to one another couldn’t be more logical and profound. The film references a treasure trove of European and American cinema both familiar and arcane as it poetically and passionately drives its central proposition forward. This is a unique premise, well researched and executed with cinematic dexterity. Do yourself a favor and give this highly original film a look.

Cruel, Usual, Necessary: The Passion of Silvio Narizzano

This is an important look at a little known and under appreciated Canadian director. Outside of Georgy Girl, most people would be hard pressed to name another of Narizzano’s films, and yet he qualifies as an auteur. Kremer’s film, buttressed by some great interviews, is at once poetic, passionate and scholarly. It was certainly a revelation to me and upon beginning to discover Silvio’s other works I can see that not only did he deserve a champion but that his legacy has found just the right one in Kremer.  This two hour essay is so watchable, the time flies by.
