    Gunbuster, as Hideaki Anno’s directorial debut, is interesting in how positively reverent it is to the robot anime that came before. This contrasts with Anno’s later Evangelion, which uses the tropes of the genre to explore the psychology of its characters and by extension its creator. Eva is dark, moody, and at times, abstract—more akin to the later chunks of any Tomino Gundam than Macross.
