A key aspect to this film is its wrestling with where evil comes from. Is it inherent or summoned. And yet Eggers gives us his answer within the films first lines. Although we might not begin evil it's our invitation and willingness to let it stay that truly warps us into what we fear. Just as a vampire must be invited in, we have invited evil to take place within us.
