I think this film is largely misunderstood by other reviewers. This is not a film about the Columbine massacre; this is a film about Rachel Scott. Additionally, her family and loved ones played a significant role in developing this movie; this wasn’t some group of strangers taking advantage of her to “push an agenda.” Since her Christian faith was an important part of her life, it is only natural for Christianity to play a significant role in the film.

American History X, while challenging, is certainly worth the watch. Norton’s performance (as expected) is incredible, playing both a believable neo-Nazi and a believable older brother after his character’s reformation. Rather than just showing the events leading to Derek Vinyard’s renouncing of the movement, they also demonstrate what led him to develop those beliefs in the first place. This overall makes the movie much more powerful and realistic. Rather than asking the audience to distance itself from racism, the film forces the audience to confront the racism within themselves.
