Love this movie. Gorgeously shot, intimate in its examination and depiction of the Syrian refugee crisis due to the al-Assad regime, it follows two sisters escaping their country to flee to Germany in hopes of competing in the Olympics for swimming. It was an uplifting story without shying away from the horror of war. Highly recommended.
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel for a good time. A werewolf movie that’s a little bit Ginger Snaps, little American Werewolf. Exactly what you’d expect from an 80s horror movie except made in 2022. They've got a scientist explaining stuff. They should've figured out how to slip a microfiche sequence in there. What makes it fun and worth your while is sure, it's predictable, but it’s SWEDISH. And that small different makes it interesting, to me at least.
I could go on for a looong time about how this movie missed so many opportunities. I think its major flaw is the same as a ton of Disney/Star Wars offerings. If you know how a character dies (or lives in this case) how do you tell an engaging story with real stakes? Andor was a cracker bc of great story telling. Obiwan was nostalgic wankery, with no stakes. THE DEMETER doesn’t subvert expectations. It's locked on rails.
Oh, this…
If you've seen the last trailer for this offering, you've seen the movie. While it's great to see Nick Cage chewing the scenery as Dracula, and Awkwafina is hilarious and a revelation to me even though her plotline is beyond dumb. Extra, as all the kids say.
For the most part, it's a pretty unimaginative movie.
