Shows Kieslowski’s love for existential themes but not as good as some of his later work.
Feels a little Tarantino-esque in the sense that it’s a lot of style and entertainment without a lot of substance. Which is fine, but doesn’t quite do it for me. The visual style definitely gets under your skin and makes you feel like you’ve been up all night with this character, but I don’t feel like there is a significant payoff at the end.
Really beautiful film about addiction/alcoholism and the long road to recovery. Saoirse Ronan is superb, she's really one of the best out there. The direction and screenwriting is very well done, I imagine this is a difficult story to make compelling for the screen and the director Nora Fingscheidt did an excellent job bringing all the different timelines and layers of the story together.
I worked on this film for three weeks and that was my primary reason for seeing it, but I thought it was actually pretty good for being a huge Hollywood vehicle. It has a good script with somewhat meaningful political/moral issues at stake rather than just pure fluff, so I was pleasantly surprised.
