    For me this film captures the human experience in a beautiful and raw way. This isn’t about the extraordinary but a man who has found contentment and joy in his work and his hobbies. Despite this, he frequently encounters judgement or mistreatment from strangers and his own sister. They attempt to place their own insecurities on him. He is not completely unaffected by this. Behind the stunning scenery and the simple joy of Hirayama, despair creeps out.

    The cinematography is impeccable, it’s a truly beautiful to watch and enjoy. I enjoyed the shots of the first library and the shot of Pearce looming over the mountain party. It reminded me of Gatsby and a villain. This is complimented with complex and multi layered characters. It felt very human and real in the darkest way possible.

    However, I felt unable to grasp at a story or a message for the film. It sometimes felt kind of directionless.
