This didn’t work for me although I appreciate that many others will have a different view. I found that the mix of broad comedy with pathos didn’t work; by trying to do both, neither had the intended impact. I felt emotionally detached from the story and characters, which was not helped by some deliberate over-acting, presumably for comedic effect. The overall impression was that the actors had a great time making this but this doesn’t translate to audience involvement. On the plus side the film had a great visual style, but this wasn’t strong enough to carry this film, which was ultimately too long.

Bizarrely, this is a little known film, which is a shame because it is a masterpiece that contains perhaps the greatest performances of two A-List 70s superstar at the peak of their game - Al Pacino (after The Godfather but before The Godfather Part Two) and Gene Hackman (shortly after The French Connection) playing two lovable drifters. It is a classic 70s road movie, virtually plotless, but nevertheless its nearly two hours running time flies by. A great script, quirky but rounded and convincing characters, very funny but also intensely moving. And what acting by the two leads. A forgotten gem.

I should have bought a bottle of wine instead. My second mistake was to persevere with this film until the end. That’s two hours of my life thrown away, as well as the equivalent of a bottle of wine. After 20 minutes I could feel the…

The Magnificent Ambersons 1942
Five stars for the first 84 minutes. I’m pretending I haven’t seen that tagged on happy ending.
