I can’t possibly overstate how important The Thing has been for me and my cinematic development. Seeing it for the first time as a child actually changed my life and it almost single-handedly shaped my interest in horror and fictional violence, things that I’ve since spent most of my academic life studying. I even wrote my bachelors thesis on the film.
It’s hard to imagine what life would have been without The Thing, it’s graphic power and impact resonates with me to this very day. A truly perfect film, only enhanced by this 35mm-screening.

Giving this a rating is meaningless, The Thing transcends ratings!

No musician has been more important to me for the past 5-6 years than Harold Budd. His involvement was the reason I started watching this series in the first place.

When Harold sadly passed away this past week, it felt fitting to finish the episodes I had left. As it turns out, I loved the series as well.
It was a beautiful thing to hear his music being so prominently featured in a series as great as this.

    Rest in peace.

The english title is very misleading since it makes this sound like a cutesy romcom and the description here on letterboxd isn’t much better.
Expect something much more melancholic, yet somewhat hopeful from this great film.

I have seen far from everything by Tsukamoto, but this emotional and powerful nightmare is easily one of his best films.
It’s a more subdued film in general, something that actually, in my opinion, enhances the frantic and nightmarish bits when they do pop up. There is no doubt that the shining star here is the  incredible Cocco, giving the performance of a lifetime (echoing of Isabelle Adjani in Possession).
A fantastic film with an incredible lead performance.
