The Holdovers 2023
Despite its frosty setting, and initially frosty characters, The Holdovers slowly warms to a comforting bowl of hearty soup. Something to enjoy every winter from now on. The humanness of Alexander Payne’s writing is in full effect here, although his usual sardonic style is more considered and the whole thing works wonderfully as a result. I was lucky to see this in 35mm so its organic graininess really played into the film’s overall appeal. Certainly on my annual Christmas viewing list from now on.

Midsommar 2019
In equal measure visceral, unsettling and funny, Ari Aster once again pulls us in with a truly colourful approach to modern horror. A stellar performance from a young cast made even better by the masterful camerawork and grading Aster / DOP Pawel Pogorzelski deliver.
