I knew I wasn’t getting a film on the formal level of Parasite, which is okay; it turned out to be a lot closer to Snowpiercer than expected. With a dash of Okja thrown in. The first hour and 30-ish minutes sail by in a flash, hilarious and sharp because everyone is only looking out for themselves. I was hoping this would lead to an end where everyone died or something bleakly comic would happen. But no, it turned out to be…

The filmmakers surely faced a difficult challenge in adapting this story: follow Eunice's story through her whole adult life, showing the parts only discussed in the afterword text, which would've made it a traditional and probably rushed-feeling biopic. What I expected and hoped would be a life-changing cinematic experience turned out to be merely great. Which would normally be fine measured against other films, but my sky-high expectations exceeded the reality of it, which leaves me feeling disappointed. There are a couple of plot points that no review managed to spoil me about which I didn’t enjoy much, and both Felicity Jones and Joe Alwyn were only okay—and possibly miscast. And the epilogue didn’t hit me the way…

The best Colin Farrell performance until The Banshees of Inisherin. The best Brendan Gleeson performance until Calvary. And the best Ralph Fiennes performance until The Grand Budapest Hotel. Just a fantastic film that still, almost 20 years later, feels like it exists on its own planet of horse tranquilizers and alcoves and museums. What a joy to rewatch every few years and luxuriate in its dialogue and blasts of violence. And whatever costumer found Colin Farrell’s button-up shirt better have gotten a massive bonus; it might be the coolest shirt ever on film.
