oops I have outed myself as an insufferable literary prick, a psychedelic know it all and fringe apologist. Joaquin Phoenix is at his best when he can let his freak flag fly in this multi layered narrative. A seemingly singular storyline with a flurry of not-so-related- but-maybe-they-are vignettes, off-shoots, and layovers. New characters spring up like Doc’s perpetually erect boner (sorry) as this spiraling hallucinogenic 1970s parable of drugs, love, crime, and California comes full circle. If you’re not paying close attention, you may go down with Alice and come up short. You gotta be fully committed to the Pynchion plot to get the pay off.
