Yeah, it’s fun. It’s kind of a strange greatest hits of the LOTR movies, down to even seemingly inconsequential reuse of dialogue lines and definitely inappropriate appearances of creatures. A Tolkien purist would rightfully be pretty disgusted — it kind of feels like the script was written by a really good AI. And it pulls over a lot of the tweets-ness from the original movies, which I think is more indicative of Peter Jackson’s affection for the material than a…

For what is a gross genre cheapie, it’s pretty apparent how assured and talented Cronenberg is from this early. In terms of plot it’s kind of a less sci-fi Lifeforce kind of thing; it manages to more or less be a great pseudo vampire movie. But in this case, it also is prescient in terms of public health/disease stuff, and has a thick subtext of gender politics, all of which adds to rather than bogging down a simple horror story.

The cameos and attention to comic book detail reward the nerd, which is fun. Especially Cassandra Nova as the villain - Grant Morrison really getting some run lately. But outside of that … pretty long, boring, repetitive, self-indulgent. Kind of is a sequel to the Loki tv show in part, but less interesting. Or a weaker version of Multiverse of Madness? Doesn’t seem to have a point of view other than hoping you think it’s cool, which makes it not…
