    The Substance

    ★★½

The Substance is an ironic title for this film as there is very little substance to be found in it. Great production and sound design don’t compensate for lackluster character development and a repetitive story that goes on way WAY too long. This film should have been 90 minutes at the very max, might have even made a good short film, but almost 2 and a half is beyond self indulgent. The entire third act is useless filler. Acting was ok for the most part except for Denis Quad who was horrible.

    Lost Highway

    ★★★½

One of David Lynch's more uneven films. The quality dip between the first and the 2nd half is quite a bummer. The first 50 minutes or so is some of Lynch's best work. The next hour is more or less a slog. Then it ends strong with the last 10-15 minutes. Acting is a mixed bag as well. Pullman does a pretty good job for the most part, Arquette is as dull as she always is, and Getty is flat-out…

A Real Pain lives up to its name in the worst possible way. Only it shouldn’t be called A Real Pain but a GREAT PAIN.  Before I explain very clearly why this film is so bad, I want to briefly mention something specific that's bugging me. I can't believe that Kieren Culkin is sweeping up all the awards for best supporting actor (which is total category fraud as he is a co-lead in this film) over Guy Pearce's transformative performance…

    Mad God

    ★★★★½

Mad God is an experimental fever dream of a film that prioritizes atmosphere, visuals, and sound over a traditional plot structure. The lack of a conventional story will for sure put some people off, as will the shockingly grotesque imagery and unrelentingly bleak tone, but for others, it will be one of the most mesmerizing and jaw-dropping pieces of art that they will ever see. Speaking for myself, my eyes were glued to the screen, and I wanted to rewatch it the second the ending credits rolled.
