The Leopard 1963
In the spirit of La Dolce Vita, this film is a thematic character study of what it means to grow old and see your own style and comfort not be suited to the “now” that surrounds you.
Fantastically rich and layered shots in an expansive lilting pseudo-plot make viewing this Italian epic a bit like a dream.
Visconti has me longing for the long shots of faces up close, particularly Lancaster’s Prince Salina, who quite stoically and gracefully accepts his fate of nobility going out of fashion in 1860 Sicily.
A slow burning feast for the eyes and soul.
