They don’t make mental health awareness PSAs like they used to. This thing rips and looks great!

The colosseum shark tank isn’t the problem. And neither is the shoe-horned story continuity or the dialogue cheese or the routine sword-and-sandals silliness. Sounds kinda fun!

The problem is that these characters are flimsy and hollow as hell, and the story bloat makes you care less and less as it goes. Mescal and Pascal are total duds. But even where the performances shine — Denzel and the emperor twins — there’s zero development or momentum. Thus, we aren’t given a reason…

All at once magnetic and mystical. The comedy and drama are not paired together, but tightly interwoven with every note and line of dialogue.

In the same way, it is both theological and humanistic, political and apolitical, conservative and progressive, sacred and secular, grounded in history but profoundly eschatological.

Sort of like being a faith-filled father in a divided, magical, scarce-yet-abundant world.

Solid cast, passable direction, TV-grade script, terrible pacing.

For as dysfunctional and selfish as these characters are, there’s little intrigue or suspense to move it along. Sure, I wondered if she actually did it. But the writing cares more about the marriage than the cause of death, and by the end, I cared about neither.

No mood, no smoke and mirrors, and no courtroom thrills. Just a slow, predictable TV drama.
