The script's substance is more a series of self-help quotes than any sort of narrative, but it is brought to life with its gentle, occasionally stunning, animation. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse's blatant philosophy - of mutual understanding, self-acceptance, emotional honesty, and kindness - is comfortingly uncomplicated, like a cup of tea on a rainy day.

This gets really dark without really earning it or saying a whole lot with it by the end, but it's a pretty good ride up until the final act, which goes just a bit too far and fast for my liking. I appreciate the boldness, showing acts that Blair Witch or Paranormal Activity wouldn't dare, though I'm not sure if that's for the better as it lacks any subtlety whatsoever. Maybe one of the most unpleasant viewing experiences I've ever…

Believe the hype. Didn't totally stick the landing, and the lack of explanation stretched my suspension of disbelief a little further than I would have liked - but it's just so entertaining and gripping, and with a strong, brutal message to boot. Maybe the best 2021 release I've seen.
