So great but not as good as WERERABBIT.
I do not get the obsession with the penguin, nor do I recognise him as the best villain. Is it the rubber glove? Is that what you’re into?

This rewatch really drove home for me that being a teenager is a big ol’ bag of dicks and also that I know too many adults who ostracise, as Regina does, as a tactic to resolve their own feelings of inadequacy.
I’m glad this film doesn’t trouble itself trying to understand her - because there are too many people you meet in life whose behaviour is as baffling and cruel and who is dug in too tight to that behaviour…

Really good - more fairytale than fable with less moral complexity and a touch less empathy for the antagonist(s) this time around. I found it strangely similar to reading Erin Morgenstern’s The Starless Sea - which, alas, alienated me with its dizzying surreal imagery and made me worried (rightly) about whether spectacle was going to be more important than plot. Obviously visually stunning with some absolutely incredible set pieces but this didn’t give me the emotional fullness of Ghibli’s usual fare.
