And that's the way it was. At least it's how I remember it.

I love a movie that on face value is a thriller, full of intrigue and backstabbing and hushed voices in dark hallways, and then turns out to that but also something so gentle. It allows us to see something that may give us the hope.

I mostly put this on to fall asleep to but there's no denying Alfonso Cuaron is a great director.

Try to imagine a world where at the end of "There Will Be Blood" the servant comes downstairs to Mr Plainview, having bashed in the skull of his enemy, built an oil empire, alienated his son, covered in brain and spit, wreaking of alcohol and barely able to stand and the servant says "You aren't an asshole Mr. Plainview. You're just trying so hard to be one." That would be a pretty fucking stupid ending. We know Zuckerberg is an asshole, we've known almost 90% of the people in this film are assholes and Aaron Sorkin had the nerve to say that??

Kubrick took a minimalist approach to the original ‘Shining’, little backstory, no in-depth explanations for the supernatural and essentially told us what would happen at the beginning, the opposite of how Stephen King saw the movie going. This long awaited sequel balances King’s pension for over-detail while being smart enough to avoid feeling like a cheap copy of Kubrick’s classic horror. It’s true strength is in its emotional exploration of trauma and the feeling of othering that that brings and how we confront our own pain while adding some smart scares and twists along the way to a satisfying ending Torrence family saga.
