Leslie Howard and Merle Oberlin are marvelous in Alexander Korda’s witty adaptation of Orczy’s venerable tale of intrigue and dual identity set during France’s Reign of Terror. The story’s politics are decidedly pro-monarchy, lamenting the tragic, brutal executions of aristocrats at the hands of Robespierre and the bloodthirsty peasants while merely paying lip service to the atrocities committed by the aristocracy that led to the revolution in the first place, but that’s not entirely surprising in a British production from the 1930s. It’s nevertheless an entertaining, well crafted picture.
