  Putting into words what the historical caesura that WW2 was is nearly impossible for those who experienced it. The Brutalist and Laszlo Toth represent the way in which trauma stays with individuals and generations and the impossibility of assimilation. The contrast between the European and Jewish experience in WW2 and the American is key. Americans simply could never understand, even Jewish American ones can never fully empathize.   this reeks of his style in the best way possible. Malick’s constrained and exacting directing works fantastically with the sprawling setting of this new world. He contrasts the beauty of the new world with the archaic western old world. There is so much here in assimilation, alterity, and humanity that is framed on screen in colonization but works to understand how we form ourselves, how we identify ourselves in a new world. Not much else I can say. It’s gorgeous.
