It may not live up to its predecessor, with a couple of nods and story beats that seem all too familiar. However, Moana and Maui maintained their charm that made them so likeable, and with a few catchy tunes and stunning animation, Moana 2 was overall a fun watch - even if they did play it safe.
Recency bias does exist so take this with a pinch of salt, but dare I say this is better than the original. Now, I’m commonly not a fan of studios making sequels to films 30 YEARS after the original (i.e Disney with Hocus Pocus, and now the teased Goonies sequel), but even I can’t deny that this film blends nostalgia and comedy together with what sequels are meant to do - expand on the original.
Let me put it this way, the film wouldn’t have been half as good if Keaton, Ryder, and O’Hara didn’t return.
This film didn’t have to go as hard as it did. It may not get the recognition it deserves because it hasn’t been heavily advertised or distributed by a mainstream studio (from what I know, anyway), but this film was a breath of fresh air.
Films based on true stories don’t usually appeal to me that much. But with a fantastic cast, brilliant humour, and a story that knew exactly what it was, arguably this is the best film I’ve seen in 2024.
What else is there to say other than this man was - and is - one of the reasons I’ve been a pro wrestling fan for as long as I have. Sure, wrestling isn’t for everyone but there’s nothing more inspiring and motivating than witnessing someone doing what they love, putting 1000% into everything they do even if it doesn’t always work out.
