This was my first film by the Brothers Quay, whom I'd only been faintly familiar with. I stumbled upon Apichatpong's Sight & Sound ballot again and decided to check it out rather than just shuffle this onto my Letterboxd watchlist. Stop-motion animation doesn't inherently entice me, and the works I find most interesting tend to eschew narrative conventions entirely, but this one doesn’t quite reach that level for me.

W/o 38 minutes. Horrible cgi and didn’t know what was even going on. Ugly film with bad songs

decided to ditch ratings for the time being, a decision that felt completely freeing while watching this. the biggest downside is not having ratings for reference/archive, but this is why i want to write more. i don't want to do reviews which stress me out, but use this like a journal to leave notes, primarily for myself.

showed this to my film studies class, week is on narrative. blu ray in screening room brings out beautiful shadows of this film…

The hype for this 8 months ago as some kind of pure spectacle led to me think the narrative would be more inventive than the kind Walk Hard put to bed 15 years ago. Luhrmann makes the musical scenes loud and fun enough but he doesn’t really know what to do with the expository scenes, which there are a lot of. Tom Hanks really does the voice the whole movie.
