Mickey 17 2025
I wanted to love this, it seemed to have everything going for it, but I just couldn't connect with this story despite loving Bong Joon Ho and really enjoying Robert Pattinson's performance. The satire and attempts at humor aren't funny or full of substance like you'd expect. The political references.....come on, even if it had come out last year, it's just basic. Felt too long because nothing was really working for me. Just didn't have the charm of Okja or Snowpiercer despite kinda being similar in terms of theme and tone.

Kinda below average compared to other Korean crime dramas, but the light hearted tone, a few decent action scenes, and a charismatic Don Lee help make it watchable. I'm not sure why they ended it like that, we might as well see what happens next come on now.

Moments of brilliance, moments of it being a drag, and moments of pure horror, especially if you're Black. I admire the bravery and creativity it took to achieve this vision, sometimes I'd wonder what's going on, but I would always figure it out. The film really picked up for me once the 2nd lead was introduced, their relationship and chemistry was a delight. I'm in love with the forest they shot this movie in, so beautiful. The film does a lot of telling and not showing, it feels like a short film stretched beyond what its story could really support. It's a low budget, one-location, 3 character film with boring characters. I like the cast, but they're not doing too much here. The premise is interesting enough, but doesn't do anything cool or visually interesting with the parallel universe themes, so it was hard to always understand or care what was going on moment to moment.
