I wanted to rate this higher (at least a 4.5/5 stars) because of the amazing framing, pacing, and overall dread-inducing atmosphere, but this movie just lost me in the last 80%. IMO It’s a cinematic sin to change the threat from one that is real (like a serial killer) to one that is supernatural (like the devil) without previously establishing it within, say, the first ten minutes; far too many horror movies do this nowadays. Sadly this resulted in a final twist that was jarring, disappointing and, frankly, cliche.
Stunning cinematography, excellent soundtrack, and a flawed, relatable protagonist you care about, beating the impossible odds: everything great cinema is made of. Hideki’s transformation from prudent businessman to compassionate cowpoke is awe-inspiring and delightful.
