rewatching this on 35 really brings out how elegantly directed this it. love how the film establishes itself as a neo-western in the opening with racing taking the place of gunfights. the racing is crunchy and has real weight to it. a real mid 2000s time capsule.

the act of someone recording tapes of your favorite show that your parents won’t let you watch with detailed annotations. the beautiful empathy of that moment, among so many other striking ones, made me very emotional.
so much to say about a film that ultimately suggests more grandeur than it actually brings. it definitely has it in moments like the excellent opening scene and mostly throughout the first part of the film, but after that the cracks begin to show. so much of it is built to be a particular kind of film from a bygone era that looks and sounds a particular way but hollow behind the eyes.
